ABOUT

Hi, I’m Laura.

I rebuilt after losing a career I’d given eight years to. Here’s the whole story, not just the highlight reel.

Laura Martin

November 13, 2023. I logged into my computer at eight in the morning, same as every Monday, and by the time I hung up the phone an hour later, my job of eight years was gone. No warning. No two week notice. Just silence where eight years used to be.

I was fifty nine. I never planned on starting over at fifty nine, and for a while I didn’t know what starting over even looked like at that age. My entire life depended on one paycheck, and then it didn’t exist anymore.

My daughter is the one who nudged me toward virtual assistant work. She’d been doing it herself and kept telling me I could do it too. I didn’t believe her at first. It took almost a year of doing the work before that decision actually paid off.

I built a virtual assistant business from nothing after that call. Along the way I picked up a second income stream too, a travel membership called Making Wishes Real, mostly because I wanted to travel more without dreading the bill afterward.

I thought I was rebuilding my income. I was rebuilding a lot more than that.

Where faith fits into all of this

My faith isn’t a separate chapter from the rebuild, it’s the thread running through the whole thing. I don’t believe God caused the job loss to teach me a lesson. I believe He met me in what broke me and began healing me there. That’s the belief behind Qualified by God and Prosper Your Soul, the devotional work I’m building alongside everything else.

Why I do this work

I’m not a guru, and I don’t have it all figured out on some superhuman level. What I have is more than twenty years in corporate life, and two restructures that each cost me a job I’d given years to, once after fifteen years, once after eight. I’ve lived through this kind of rebuild before, more than once. I have a VA business I built from scratch, and a second income stream I added without dropping the first. This took grit, determination, and stubborn faith. I understand what sustainable income actually requires because I had to find it the hard way.

If you’re in the middle of your own rebuild, whatever that looks like for you right now, I’d love for you to stay a while.
